ผลงานสุดเจ๋งไว้ลายอีกเรื่องของผู้กำกับ John Carpenter เกี่ยวกับเหตุการณ์แปลกๆ ที่เกิดขึ้นเหมือนในนิยายเล่มหนึ่ง เริ่มต้นที่นักสืบเอกชน John Trent รับบทโดย Sam Neill ได้ถูกว่าจ้างให้ตามหาตัวนักเขียนนิยายสยองขวัญที่ชื ่อว่า Sutter Cane รับบทโดย Jurgen Prochnow นักเขียนนิยายเรื่องสยองขวัญ ที่มีแฟนคลับมากมายทั่วประเทศที่หลงไหลในเนื้อหาความ สยอง ลึกลับที่สมจริง ที่จู่ๆ ก็หายตัวไปอย่างลึกลับในวันที่ต้นฉบับตอนสุดท้ายของน ิยายชุดนั้นจะจบ ทำให้แฟนคลับถามหา ต้นสังกัดเห็นท่าไม่ดีเลยต้องหาวิธีเรียกตัว John Trent ได้สืบหาเบาะแสมากมายจากนิยายของ Cane จนได้พบแผนที่ลับ ที่เกิดจากการเอาปกนิยายของ Cane มาวางเรียงกัน เกิดเป็นแผนที่เมืองเล็กๆที่ชื่อว่า Hobb’s End ซึ่งพอสอบถามไปๆ มาๆ จากหลายๆแหล่งเกี่ยวกับเมือง Hobb’s End นี้ก็ได้สร้างความฉงนให้ John Trent มากขึ้นไปอีก
