มันเป็นเรื่องราวของ รอย ฮอบส์ หนุ่มบ้านนาที่ใฝ่ฝันจะเป็นนักเบสบอลมืออาชีพ และได้สร้างไม้เบสบอลคู่ใจของตัวเองขึ้นมา ตั้งชื่อว่า Wonder Boy (พร้อมสัญลักษณ์สายฟ้าเสร็จสรรพ) ฝีมือขว้างลูกระดับพระกาฬของพ่อหนุ่มเข้าตาแมวมองจนไ ด้รับเลือกเข้าเมเจอร์ลีก แต่ดันถูกเป่าไส้แตกซะก่อนจะได้เข้าร่วมทีม
สิบหกปีต่อมา เขาได้กลับมาใหม่ ด้วยฐานะรุกกี้รุ่นลุงวัย 35 (ซึ่งเป็นอายุที่นักเบสบอลปกติจะแขวนไม้แล้ว) เขากลับมาในตำแหน่งไรท์ฟิล และแบตเตอร์ (พร้อมไม้คู่ใจ) ที่หวดแม่นจนกลายเป็นตำนาน และเหล่าเซียนพนันต้องเต้นผาง รีบส่งนางนกต่อมาทำเสน่ห์เพื่อหวังดับอนาคตพ่อเจ้าปร ะคุณ
รอยคุงจะหลุดบ่วงกามของสาวผมทองไปได้หรือไม่ เขาจะยอมเสี่ยงชีวิตที่กระเสาะกระแสะจากโรคกระเพาะทะ ลุ(สาบานนะว่านี่พระเอกฮอลลีวู้ด)เพื่อลงแข่งนัดสำคั ญไหม เขาจะสร้างตำนานให้กลายเป็น The best that ever was ได้อย่างไร ธรรมะกับอธรรม ใครล่ะจะเป็นฝ่ายกำชัยในตอนสุดท้าย (คงไม่ต้องตอบมั้ง)
หนังเบสบอลเพียวๆเป็นอะไรที่สร้างยาก และเสี่ยงขาดทุนสูง หนังเบสบอลฮอลลีวู้ดส่วนใหญ่จึงต้องเบี่ยงเบนไปทางใด ทางหนึ่ง เช่น ดราม่า (A league of their own), โรแมนติก (For love of the game), โรแมนติกคอเมดี้ (Bull Durham), ไปจนถึงแฟนตาซี (Field of dreams) โดยเขี่ยเบสบอลเป็นวิ้งๆอยู่เป็นแบ็คกราวด์ แต่ The Natural นี่ข้าพเจ้าอับจนปัญญา ไม่รู้จะวางเข้าซองไหน เพราะตัวเรื่องคล้ายๆจะดราม่า ผสมความรักอันแสน cliche แต่มี element ชวนหัวร่อ (แบบข้าพเจ้าขำเอง ผกก.ไม่ได้หวังให้ขำ) และความเว่อร์โคตระจนเฉียด fantasy พร้อมกับปมที่คลายไม่ออกของเรื่องที่สามารถจะข้องใจค นดูไปได้อีกนานเท่านาน (ยัยบ้าที่ยิงพระเอกมันเป็นใคร)
เรื่องนี้แม้จะตอบสนองความฝันของผู้ชาย(?) ประมาณในเรื่องมีสาวสวยกี่คน พ่อหวังฟันหมด ก็ยังสอนให้รู้ว่า นอกใจเพียงครั้ง อาจพลาดพลั้งถึงตาย
