ในปี ค.ศ.1945 ช่วงท้ายของสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง กองทัพของจักรวรรดิญี่ปุ่นเริ่มตกเป็นรองกองทัพฝ่ายส ัมพันธมิตรทำให้กองทัพญี่ปุ่นต้องรีบจัดทำอาวุธเคมีแ ละอาวุธชีวภาพเพื่อพลิกสถานการณ์สงครามให้ได้ หน่วย 731 จึงไล่ล่าจับประชาชนชาวจีนและรัสเซียมาที่ห้องทดลอง หนึ่งในนักโทษก็คือพ่อค้าเร่หวังหย่งจางที่ถูกเข้าใจ ผิดว่าเป็นหวังจื่อหยางที่เป้นฝ่ายต่อต้านญี่ปุ่น ด้วยความสามารถด้านภาษาหวังหย่งจางจึงถูกมอบหมายให้ท ำงานทั่วไปในเรือนจำซึ่งแท้จริงแล้วก็คือห้องทดลองขน าดใหญ่ ในทุก ๆ วันจะมีนักโทษที่ถูกเรียกตัวไปจากห้องขังโดยทหารญี่ป ุ่นบอกว่านักโทษเหล่านี้มีคำสั่งให้ “ปล่อยตัว” แต่แล้วหวังหย่งจางได้รู้ว่านักโทษที่ถูกเรียกตัวมาเ หล่านี้แท้จริงแล้วถูกนำมาทดลองด้วยวิธีการต่าง ๆ ซึ่งผู้ที่ถูกทดลองไม่เคยมีชีวิตรอด หวังหย่งจางจึงวางแผนหลบหนีโดยชวนนักโทษคนอื่นร่วมหน ีไปกับเขาด้วย โดยอาศัยช่วงที่มีเทศกาลยามากาสะที่การวางกำลังหละหล วม แต่ในความเป็นจริงแล้วไม่เคยมีนักโทษคนใดออกจากค่ายน รกในแบบที่มีชีวิตมาก่อนเลย
