ซูซาน (เดมี มัวร์) และ มาร์ก (ดีแลน แม็คเดอร์มอตต์) เป็นคู่สามีภรรยาที่เหมือนจะน่าอิจฉาในสายตาใคร ๆ
ทั้งที่ความจริงแล้วชีวิตรักของทั้งคู่ไม่ได้สวยหรูข นาดนั้น ก่อนที่วันหนึ่งมาร์กจะถูกจับกุมด้วยความผิดหลายข้อห า
และต้องเข้าคุก ซูซานเองแม้จะไม่มีส่วนรู้เห็นด้วยแต่ก็โดนลูกหลงถูก จับด้วย อย่างไรก็ตามศาลยังเมตตา
ตัดสินให้เธอแค่ต้องทำงานรับใช้สังคมด้วยการช่วยเหลื อ บิล โอกแลนด์ (อเล็ก บอลด์วิน) อดีตนักเขียน
ซึ่งประสบอุบัติเหตุจนตาบอดด้วยการอ่านหนังสือให้เขา ฟัง จากความสัมพันธ์ที่ดูเหมือนไม่มีอะไรเกินเลย
