หนังเล่าเรื่องของ 'เดวิด' (Matthew Broderick) เด็กวัยรุ่นคนหนึ่งที่บังเอิญเจาะรหัสของเกมจำลองสถา นการณ์สงครามโลก ซึ่งเจ้าเกมนี้มันยังควบคุมรหัสยิงนิวเคลียร์ยามฉุกเ ฉินอีกด้วย ซึ่งพอเดวิดไปเล่นเกมกับเจ้าคอมพิวเตอร์ ปรากฎว่ามันไม่ยอมหยุดเล่นซะอย่างนั้น แถมการเล่นเกมของมันในโปรแกรมยังทำให้พวกกองทัพแตกตื ่นคิดว่าโซเวียตยิงขีปนาวุธมาจริง ๆ จึงเตรียมการตอบโต้อันจะนำไปสู่สงครามโลกครั้งที่ 3
